The Political Council of the Democratic Party (PDM) that met last weekend discussed the return to an older practice of the PDM, when the candidates for the party’s leadership were chosen by primaries, with debates, including televised ones. In the program “Reply” on Prime TV channel, the suspended vice president of the PDM Andrian Candu said there are a number of issues on which the Democrats have yet to work, such as the doctrine, method of electing leaders and preparations for the local elections, IPN reports.
“We discussed several necessary processes that we regrettably could not perform on time. That’s why I think the postponement of the extraordinary congress until September 7 was a very good decision,” he stated.
Andrian Candu noted there is no split inside the Democratic Party as they rumor. “The fact that the post of president was vacated has nothing to do with the so-called dissentions as Pavel Filip remains the party’s president and first vice president whose task is to manage all these processes until the congress,” he said.
The politician also said the Democratic Party cannot be reformed overnight and this will just enter a reformation process following the decisions that will be taken by the Council on September 7.
Andrian Candu stated Vladimir Plahotniuc almost does not become involved in the adoption of the most important decisions related to the political agenda and the leadership of the PDM. This was actually the intention when he withdrew from the post of president. “We surely discuss, but the direct involvement in decisions and the future reformation process will be minimal or equal to zero,” he said.
After the June 8, 2019 sitting of Parliament, where the ACUM bloc and the Party of Socialists announced that they formed a parliamentary majority, and following the exertion of public pressure, the Democratic Party decided to move to the opposition. The then leader of the PDM Vladimir Plahotniuc vacated the post of president of the party and left Moldova. Later the PDM announced a broad reformation process.
