Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Năstase, Minister of the Interior, said that he is now looking for solutions to improve the salary situation of the over 15,000 police officers from the system. “The police officers were declared by law functionaries with a special status, but their salaries weren’t adjusted. Why? Because they are many in number and a lot of money is needed for the purpose?” the minister was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

According to him, the Police chiefs earlier got thousands of euros in envelopes. “For them money was found, but for the over 15,000 police officers it was not. I’m looking for resources for these people to feel one day that they are not forgotten and ignored,” stated the politician.

As to the criminal case started against activist Gheorghe Petic, the minister said he hopes this will be released after the first hearings that were set, for dubious reasons, later than the lawyers asked. “This is worrisome. I would be glad if all the judges from the system realize that arbitrariness and illegality should disappear from the justice sector,” stated Andrei Năstase.

He explained that at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, he voted for Russia’s return in order to contribute to making this country be more responsible. “That resolution makes Russia more responsible. It forms part of the dialogue and the responsibilities of the Council of Europe member states, in case they depart or deviate from the rules of these European institutions,” said the minister.

He also said that he thought about the people who live in the Transnistrian region and about the human rights when he voted for Russia’s return to the PACE as he wants the rights of those people to be defended at the ECHR. His vote was for dialog, for solving Moldova’s problems in a peaceful way.

Also, Andrei Năstase noted that in the nearest future he will pay visits to Romania and Ukraine. The visit to Romania was set for July 2.
