Andrei Donică, of the Professionals’ Movement “Speranța-Nadejda”, wasn’t admitted to the competition for the mayoralty of Chisinau. A decision to his effect was taken by the Chisinau District Electoral Council.

Contacted by IPN for details, the Council’s head Viorica Gadymba said that Andrei Donică was registered as a candidate for mayor of Condrița village and the Chisinau District Electoral Council therefore refused to register him. The Electoral Code provides that a person can run for mayor and for local councilor in one electoral constituency and cannot run for these posts in a number of electoral constituencies of the same level.

The Chisinau District Electoral Council’s decision can be challenged. If it is upheld, the preliminary order on the ballot will be modified.

Before the given decision was adopted, Andrei Donică stated on Facebook Live that pressure is being exerted on members of the Council for these not to register him. According to him, the law bans him from running concomitantly in Chisinau and Balti, not in Chisinau and Condrița simultaneously. He noted he will struggle to be registered as an election runner in Chisinau even if he was also registered as a candidate for mayor of Condrița village, which forms part of the municipality of Chisinau.

So far, the Chisinau District Electoral Council registered 20 candidates for mayor of Chisinau:
