“I decided to get involved in the process of joining the European Union in the Republic of Moldova because I could not stand aside,” said the governor of the National Bank of Moldova Anca Dragu. She noted that she accepted this position because she has the necessary experience to help Moldova get closer to the European community in the financial and banking sectors, IPN reports.

Anca Dragu was appointed governor of the National Bank of Moldova by a decision of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on December 22, 2023. She has an impressive career both in Romania and at European and international levels. She noted that she accepted this position to contribute to the European integration process in the Republic of Moldova.

“The turning point was when Moldova started its efforts to join the European Union. It is a crucial, unique moment, a moment we didn’t anticipate a few years ago and, in order to achieve this goal, each of those who can do something, must make an effort. I couldn’t stand aside. The assets I was bringing to the leadership of the National Bank of Moldova were important,” Anca Dragu stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The governor noted that Romania’s experience in the pre-accession processes can be useful to the Republic of Moldova, and her objective as the head of the NBM is to ensure the independence and integrity of the institution.

“I know what banking system means because I started my career 27 years ago at the National Bank of Romania. I know what European institutions, what accession negotiations mean and know what to do in this process and what not to do. I saw what happened in the pre-accession process in Romania and in the process immediately after accession. I know what international financial institutions, the IMF mean. I think I bring a series of useful information and knowledge to the Republic of Moldova, which is in this clear and, I hope, irreversible process of European integration,” the governor of the National Bank of Moldova said.

Anca Dragu was the first woman in Romania to hold the office of President of the Senate (2020-2021), as well as the second woman in Romania’s history as Minister of Public Finance (2015-2017). She worked for more than ten years as an economist at the local and regional office of the International Monetary Fund (2001-2013).
