Political stability was established in Moldova this year following the investing of the Government led by Pavel Filip. Despite criticism, the parliamentary alliance ensured stability for doing all the reforms and success was witnessed owing to political stability, Anatolie Zagorodnyi, MP of the Social-Democratic Platform, stated in the public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years”, which was staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

The MP said the adoption of a package of laws on integrity, which refer to the declaration of property and integrity of functionaries, is an important event of this year. Thus, the functionaries will be held accountable if they do not declare their property, while Parliament will continue to encourage corruption fighting. “I want to remind about the arrest of a number of functionaries, judges, prosecutors, lawyers and politicians as well for acts of corruption,” he stated.

Anatolie Zagorodnyi criticized the former governments, especially of the Lib-Dems, saying the people witnessed the harshest poverty then. Now the authorities are making effort to promote vital reforms for the country. “Any promoted reform affects the employees and ordinary people, but the reforms will ultimately bring benefits. They are painful and unpopular, but I call on the people not to focus on statements and accusations if we want these reforms to produce results. The people must have a pension on which they will be able to survive,” he stated.

Asked to forecast the political developments, the MPs said evolution is seen by the failure of some of the parties that disappear from the political arena and the appearance of new parties based on the same voters. However, there should be three or four parties in Moldova that would share the people’s preferences and would act in their interests, not extreme parties of the right or of the left.

Anatolie Zagorodnyi considers the government must concentrate on the people’s problems, not on erroneous geostrategic options. “When the politicians say the country follows the course to Russia and then to Europe and vice versa, problems are caused to the state that is already impoverished and does not have own resources,” he stated.

The public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years” was the 67th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation
