“The dilemma of the “full-fledged government” or “snap parliamentary elections” should be solved during periods favorable to society. It is absolutely evident that an overwhelming part of the current MPs publicly say that they want snap elections, but in essence they do not want these elections because many of them will simply not enter the next legislative body. But the idea of snap elections is very popular in society and this is due to the fact that the current Parliament has a disastrous image in society. Public opinion considers this Parliament lost legitimacy,” political analyst Anatol Țăranu stated in IPN’s public debate “Components of political confrontation and impact of this on society”.

According to the expert, the essence of the conflict between the idea of snap elections and the investing of a full-fledged government changed during the past three months. “As long as the pandemic processes and the economic crisis do not reach extremely alarming proportions, the snap elections can be accepted as a cardinal solution that can change the state of affairs in the Republic of Moldova in accordance with the interests of the majority of people. But the pandemic crisis that reached alarming proportions changed the paradigm, including the perceptions. It is now clear that the saving of human lives and containing of the COVID-19 pandemic are now the top priority. Emphases changed and priorities changed too,” stated Anatol Țăranu.

He noted that until recently the team of Maia Sandu insisted on snap elections, but now they say a government with full powers is needed to stop the pandemic. “We have an extremely difficult situation when the incumbent President and her team decided to follow the path of the investing of a full-fledged government, but in the political conditions dictated by them,” said Anatol Țăranu.

The political analyst said an absolute political master cannot exist in Moldova. “A democratic society works when there is the separation of powers in the state. The Constitution should clearly delimit the responsibilities of the executive, legislative and judicial powers as there will be less space for conflicts, including political ones, in such a case.”

Anatol Țăranu noted the proposals formulated by Maia Sandu’s team for overcoming the political crisis should not be criticized. Radical changes are proposed, including the creation of an anticorruption tribunal, as the current judicial system failed to fight corruption. The corrupt MPs do not feel comfortable now. Therefore, some of the MPs will vote for the Grosu Government so as to avoid the failure of particular parties in the future parliamentary elections.

The public debate “Components of political confrontation and impact of this on society” is the 179th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
