The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) can bank on the support of the National Unity Party (PUN) in the process of coming closer to the European Union, PUN acting chairman Anatol Șalaru, ex-minister of defense, stated in a public debate hosted by IPN. According to the politician, there is currently no alternative to the current government if only the taking over by parties that serve Russia’s interests in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

The PUN acting chairman noted that the Recean Cabinet’s priority to ensure discipline should start from the important institutions that ensure the country’s security. The rise in salaries of employees should be associated with their rigorous selection according to meritocracy.

“The state institutions cannot be strengthened only by increasing salaries. The salaries should be raised, but more rigorous control should also be ensured. The discipline in state institutions is now dissatisfactory. After the leaving of Plahotniuc who named all these persons to post according to party criteria, these people remained confused. They formed their own cliques and spheres of influence in institutions and it is very hard to break these spheres. We have the example of the justice sector reform. The system puts up resistance to the justice sector reform and this reform is a complete failure as the whole system is against and the authorities do not have mechanisms and experience to do the reforms,” stated the ex-minister of defense.

Anatol Șalaru said that amid the security crisis and the hybrid warfare faced by Moldova, the government’s priorities should be adjusted to the new realities. To be able to cope with the crises, the Moldovan authorities need serious expertise from outside. If the important institutions do not do their job, the state will fail.

“If the current government does not manage to ensure discipline in the important state institutions, it will not succeed. For the purpose, it needs foreign advisers who know the specific features, not experts in making coffee. The war the past year showed that many Europeans, experts, European commissioners and MEPs didn’t know the situation in Russia and Ukraine or in our country. They had an incorrect impression about the developments in these countries. We are now in the middle of a hybrid war. That’s why we need serious expertise, not the expertise of those who inform themselves from Facebook and from the press about the situation in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Anatol Șalaru.

The PUN leader also said that his party can offer unconditional support to the current government. In times of crisis, the politicians should lay emphasis on the national interests, not on party interests.

“There is now no alternative to the government. The PUN from the start supported the PAS and President Maia Sandu. We criticized their mistakes, but we do not impose conditions for being attracted into the government. The personal ambitions should not be placed at the forefront. If they need the support of our people, we can offer this support unconditionally. We support them as there is no other alternative. Only Russia in the Republic of Moldova is the alternative. All the PAS’s initiatives designed to bring us closer to the European Union, to make the Republic of Moldova a free country are supported,” stated the ex-minister of defense.

The public debate entitled “New Government’s capacity to select priorities and to cope with them” was the 274th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
