Parliament appointed ex-minister of the interior Ana Revenco as director of the Center for Strategic Communication and Disinformation Countering at the suggestion of President Maia Sandu, IPN reports.

“It is first of all important to ascertain, and I think the citizens of the Republic of Moldova felt this well the past few years, that disinformation became a lethal weapon of the hybrid war and this disinformation directly targets the citizen, hits the unity, the capacity of the state to develop as a democratic society. Disinformation, manipulation, false news have existed here as part of the hybrid war that has been waged by Russia for 30 years, but exploded 1,000 times following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” Ana Revenco stated in Parliament.

According to the authorities, the Center for Strategic Communication and Disinformation Countering will have the mission of strengthening cooperation between institutions in the fight against disinformation, manipulation of information and foreign interference which pose a danger or can undermine national security and affect the national interests.

The law that was adopted last summer provides that the Center is managed by a director named by Parliament at the suggestion of the President for a five-year period. But by the bill adopted today by Parliament, Ana Revenco was named to this post for an interim period of 12 months.

Ana Revenco held the post of minister of the interior during August 2021 – July 2023. She earlier served as adviser to the President on defense and national security and as secretary of the Supreme Security Council. Before this, she managed the Cemented for Combating Trafficking in Persons of the Ministry of the Interior and acted as the founder and executive director of the International Center “La Strada” Moldova.
