The law that amends and supplements the Audiovisual Code of the Republic of Moldova came into force today, September 11, following its publication in the Official Gazette. According to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, which drafted the law, the given amendments define notions typical of digital terrestrial television, such as multiplex and multiplex provider, and set the normative framework needed to ensure the transition and functioning of digital terrestrial television on Moldova’s territory, IPN reports.

Under the new regulations, the Broadcasting Coordination Council will be able to held contests to issue broadcast licenses for using digital terrestrial multiplexes. There will be exhibited the positions (slots) from the first multiplex that covers 65% of Moldova’s territory. The first multiplex has the capacity to broadcast up to 15 TV program services.

The advantages of digital terrestrial television include the efficient use of spectrum and provision of more capacity than analog, better quality images, lower operating costs for broadcast and transmission, stereo sound and possibility of watching programs with several soundtracks or with subtitles in several languages.

Moldova pledged to ensure the transition to digital terrestrial television by signing the regional agreement on the planning of the digital terrestrial broadcasting service “Geneva-2006”, which was signed by 104 states.
