Parliament today adopted in final reading an amendment that enables Parliament to directly appoint the director of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC), IPN reports.

The nomination shall be endorsed by a minimum of 20 MPs and be subject to prior approval by Parliament’s Legal Commission.

This replaces the previous procedure whereby the NAC director was appointed following a competition process organized by the Legal Commission.

The bill’s sponsors from the governing Action and Solidarity Party believe the change will make lawmakers more responsible in nominating one or more candidates to the position.

In final reading, an amendment was accepted which requires an absolute majority (51 votes or more) for the removal of the NAC director, which is to be proposed by at least one-third of MPs and approved by the Legal Commission. The bill describes the grounds for removal as well.

Other provisions related to the appointment of the NAC director, such as the five-year term, remain unchanged.
