The Italian citizens on June 2 celebrate the national day of Italy, known as the Republic Day. The event commemorates the day in 1946 when Italy was proclaimed a Republic as a result of a referendum. Italy’s Ambassador to Moldova Valeria Biagiotti on this occasion transmitted a congratulatory message addressed to the compatriots and also to “the Moldovan friends”, IPN reports.

“The national holiday this year takes place in a particularly difficult moment for our country and for the whole world. The necessary security measures imposed by the health emergency, together with the respect for the victims of the pandemic, prevent us from meeting, as each year, to celebrate the birth of our Republic in a festive atmosphere. I yet want to offer my best sincere wishes in the hope that you can be near the people you love on this solemn day,” stated Valeria Biagiotti.

The diplomat noted that today the thoughts are aimed first of all at those who fought against this virus on the frontline and to the families of all those who lost dear persons. Valeria Biagiotti urged to observe a moment’s silence in memory of those who lost the battle with the disease.

“The Republic’s anniversary coincides with the moment when Italy steps towards the resumption of the activities and reopening of the territory following the restrictions and sacrifices of the last few months, due to the courageous results achieved in the fight against the pandemic. Once again we proved that we are a great country that knows to find the power and solidarity needed in the most difficult moments of its history,” stated the ambassador.

“As the appearance of the Republic 74 years ago was the peak of a path to the liberation of the national renaissance after World War II, there is no doubt that the Italian people will be able to overcome the current difficulties too.  Even if the circumstances make us maintain the distance, you can be sure that the Embassy will always remain near you.”

Addressing “the Moldovan friends”, Valeria Biagiotti said that when this difficult moment comes to an end, the excellent relations between Italy and the Republic of Moldova will become even closer owing to the sacrifice and effort made to overcome this patch.
