Tensions and altercations between the police and Nistru war veterans and also locals were witnessed in Varnița village of Anenii Noi district, where polling places were established for voters residing in the Transnistrian region. The veterans and locals were barred by a police cordon after they tried to block the road coming from Bender. Cordons were later formed on both sides of the road so as not to allow the traffic to be blocked IPN reports.
Locals said the Transnistrian voters were paid for voting a particular candidate. They also accuse the police of not fulfilling their duties and of not checking all the units of transport coming from the Transnistrian region so as to prevent the illegal transportation of voters to polling stations.
A number of MPs, including of the Party of Socialists and the Party of Action and Solidarity, went to the scene. PAS MP Igor Grosu said things should be kept under control there.
Some of the veterans noted that teargas and electroshock weapons were used against them.
The General Police Inspectorate said the situation in Varnița remains difficult, but police officers are on the spot to calm things down and to ensure the people’s safety.
