Political analyst Igor Botan attributed the low voter turnout in today's referendum to both a strong boycott by the Communist Party and passive campaign efforts by the governing four-party Alliance for European Integration, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Some parties within the AEI conducted a superficial campaign. The Liberal Party, for example, started campaigning just a week before (the referendum)”, the analyst stated at a talk show on Publika TV. He also denounced the failure of key Alliance politicians to appear at televised debates during the referendum campaign. On the other hand, said Igor Botan, the Communists' persistent boycotting campaign paid off. “The 'antimafia' campaign promoted intensely by a television channel disillusioned many voters and that hit the AEI the hardest”, Botan added.
