Alina Russu has given up the post of Central Electoral Commission chairperson by submitting a formal request to Parliament today. “The application in practice of the recent amendments to the electoral law could raise suspicions about the independence of decisions made by the higher electoral bodies”, she explained.

In a post on CEC’s Facebook account, Alina Russu further stated: “It was not a simple decision, but fully responsible. Throughout my tenure I had carried out my duties in accordance with the legislation to ensure citizens’ both the right to elect and to be elected.”

“In a democracy based on the rule of law, it is crucial that the freedom of expression is guaranteed both for voters and for the officials responsible for organizing and conducting the electoral process (...) Interferences in any elements of the electoral process are incompatible with the free development of participatory democracy”, she added.

Alina Russu was elected chairperson of the Central Electoral Commission in June 2016, shortly after being appointed by Parliament as CEC member.
