Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo said he will do his best for politically fabricated cases and businessmen dispossessed of businesses to no longer exist in Moldova. Moreover, the official said a number of prosecutors were charged after they persecuted persons, IPN reports.

“There are several criminal cases started against prosecutors. There are prosecutors under arrest as what they did is illogical. They went beyond any limit. Imagine that the prosecutor, together with a group of persons, takes over a person’s property worth €1.8 million. The person was jailed for a minor violation, for having bought a car at a different price. A notary was brought to that person in jail and this signed over the property to other persons. The person was taken to the bank to transfer the money to the accounts of offshore companies. This is how the prosecutors worked,” Alexandru Stoianoglo stated in the talk show “About us” on Jurnal TV channel.

He noted that no criminal cases were started illegally after he took up his duties. “I assumed a responsibility, first of all before my colleagues. I want the prosecutors to become more courageous. I believe in the prosecution service. Even if we have many problems in the system, the prosecution service has very good personnel. There are many highly-qualified professionals,” he said.

Alexandr Stoianoglo also said that particular subjects have been extensively discussed in the public sphere. For example, the case of corruption of 14 Communist MPs who defected to the Democratic Party several years ago was closed because of absence of solid evidence. “We interrogated MPs and tried to collect evidence, but our possibilities here are limited. Such evidence can be identified only when money is passed on. If we base our investigation only on politicians’ statements that are political in character, we will be unable to prove the truth. If following such a principle, each second MP can accuse the political opponent of having been bought and we cannot charge a person based on such assertions,” stated the official.

As to the footage presented by MP Iurie Reniță, which shows Igor Dodon receiving a bag, which was allegedly with money, from the former Democratic leader, the prosecutor general said a prosecutor was entrusted with this case. The authenticity of the footage is to be determined. “But it is unreal to build the accusation only on this footage. To collect more evidence, we need to question participants in that event,” he stated

It also won’t be easy to probe the usurpation of state power, which occurred last June as some of the MPs maintain. Alexandr Stoianoglo said there were no such precedents in Moldova and the task of prosecutors is thus rather difficult.

Asked about his relationship with President Igor Dodon, the prosecutor general said he does not want to walk about this as he would justify himself for something that does not exist. “No one sees that the President’s intervention in the appointment of the prosecutor general is just a formality. The president signed the decision made by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. The prosecutors put their trust in me and my task is not to betray them. When I saw that the legislation was modified and allowed anyone to compete in the contest to fill the post of prosecutor general, I decided to take part. I have no obligation to any of the political bodies and will not have.”

As to the criminal case started against Democratic MP Constantin Țuțu, Alexandr Stoianoglo said this was sent to court and the accusation is related to a murder committed in Orhei. Țuțu was placed in quarantine when he was arrested because he had signs of infection with COVID-19.
