AEI leaders decide to constitute commission of inquiry into Sorin Paciu’s death

The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI), in a January 14 meeting, agreed to set up a parliamentary commission that will investigate how the law enforcement bodies dealt with the case of Sorin Paciu’s death. A special sitting of Parliament will be held at the beginning of next week at the latest to constitute this commission, Info-Prim Neo reports. The chairman of the PDM Marian Lupu said the commission will make sure that the inquiry is correct and not politically influenced. All those to blame for the violation of the law will be punished. “Those who broke the law, no matter who they are, must be held accountable,” he stated. The PLDM’s leader Vlad Filat said the new commission will establish how the law enforcement bodies and their managers acted. According to him, Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko should resign unconditionally. “He does not have the moral authority to hold this post. Besides the dismissal, he will also suffer the consequences for not fulfilling his obligations,” he stated. Vlad Filat also said that if the prosecutor does not resign voluntarily, he will be dismissed by the Parliament’s vote. The national legislation does not stipulate that the prosecutor can suspend himself or be suspended from post. Thus, he is on leave from January 14. The head of the Liberal parliamentary group Ion Hadarca said the new commission will determine the way work was done as there are many questions as to how the competent institutions reacted. He expressed his regret at the fact that this case was made public with a great delay and at how some of the politicians speculate on this case. Sorin Paciu was wounded mortally on December 23 during hunting that involved government officials. The vice president of the Chisinau Court of Appeals Gheorghe Cretu is investigated for unintentional murder in this case. In a news conference earlier, politician Sergiu Mocanu blamed the prosecutor general for Sorin Paciu’s death.
