After the Chisinau City Hall called the PAS and PSRM local councilors' vote to annul the sanitation tax illegal, the two parties responded, IPN reports.

The leader of the PAS faction in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), Zinaida Popa, stated that the decision made yesterday regarding local taxes for 2025 was voted legally and, according to the law, must be signed within five days by the CMC secretary and the session president. Any attempt by the Chisinau City Hall to block this process is an administrative abuse, she declared.

"We remind Mayor Ion Ceban that it is the councilors who have the right to approve or annul decisions at the local level, including the budget and taxes. The 'in force' status of an act in the State Register of Local Acts does not take away the Council's right to review and repeal a decision if it was adopted illegally," Popa added.

The Socialist Party (PSRM) commented that it consistently defends the interests of the city's residents and that its local councilors are ready to vote for any decision that benefits Chisinau and its people.

Asked by IPN, PSRM faction vice president in CMC, Alexandr Odințov, stated that the biggest problem is the lack of dialogue between the Council and the City Hall.

"The issue is that there is no dialogue or compromise. They are pursuing their political interests and those of the MAN party (Mayor Ion Ceban's party)", Odintov said.

The sanitation tax in Chisinau, amounting to 120 lei per year, was canceled during the CMC session on January 28, with the votes of 26 councilors: 19 from PAS, 6 from PSRM, and Victor Chironda from the "Dignity and Truth Platform" party.

The Chisinau City Hall stated that what happened during the January 28 session was a manipulation of public opinion and a political move by PAS and PSRM councilors. The City Hall emphasized that it would act strictly in accordance with the legal framework to ensure that the actions taken during the CMC session are brought back within legal boundaries, as the municipal councilors and representatives of the State Chancellery blatantly violated the current legislation in the process of adopting local normative acts.
