On frosty days, from Friday to Monday, the Centre for Accommodation of persons without permanent residence located on Haltei Street, 2, in Chisinau, has had a 24-hour work schedule, being more demanded than usual. At present sixty persons are being sheltered here, head of Social Assistance Municipal Division Eugenia Ciobanu stated at the Chisinau City Hall’s session on Monday, February 26, Info-Prim Neo reports.
As Ciobanu says, on weekends persons without a permanent home have been brought from the street, especially by the policemen.
The Centre for Accommodation of persons without permanent residence has a capacity of 70 persons. As a rule, the Centre is open only during the daytime hours, but homeless persons are allowed to spend the night here, enjoying gratis supper and breakfast. Also, they enjoy hygienic conditions, having the possibility to change their clothes and consult a jurist or a social assistant.
The Centre was founded in September 2004 with a view to providing help to persons in difficult situations. Since its foundation, over 500 persons without permanent home have benefited from the Centre’s services.
According to Chisinau Emergency Service, once the weather got colder, two homeless persons at least are taken to the Emergency Hospital to receive treatment for hypothermia. The ambulance doctors say they have to transport to hospitals persons found in the street from evening to morning, even though they do not manifest symptoms of hypothermia, but are under the influence. This situation occurs due to the fact that there is no asylum in the capital that would shelter these persons during the daytime hours.
