About 2.5 million voters are expected to take part in June 3 local elections

The electoral registers for the June 3 local elections include about 2.5 million voters or by roughly 300,000 more compared with the local elections of May 25, 2003.
The largest number of voters – 580,000 – is expected to go the 285 polling stations in the Chisinau municipality. A number of 233 poling stations of these will be located in the city of Chisinau. The Botanica sector in Chisinau has the largest electorate – about 128,000. It is followed by the sector of Rascani with approximately 122,000 voters, Buiucani with about 82,500 voters, Ciocana with nearly 80,000 voters and Centru with roughly 74,000 voters. Approximately 94,600 eligible voters live in the suburbs of the capital.
The Balti municipality has over 100,000 voters, the districts of Orhei, Cahul and Hancesti about 800,000 eligible voters each.
The turnout at the local elections of 2003 was 58.68%. The electorate in the districts of Basarabeasca, Cantemir and Ocnita was the most active. The attendance there was 75%. The turnout in the cities of Balti and Chisinau was 35% and, respectively, 45% - the lowest in Moldova.
