As many as 420 mayors were elected in the June 3 local elections. Another 478 settlements will elect their mayors in the second round of the local elections on June 17. According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the Party of Communists (PCRM) has the largest number of representatives elected mayors in the first round – 223. The PCRM obtained 15 mandates of mayor in Soroca district, 14 mandates in Briceni district, by 13 mandates in Hancesti and Floresti districts etc. In the municipality of Balti and in the districts of Basarabeasca and Criuleni they got by a single mandate of mayor. The “Moldova Noastra” Alliance Party obtained 61 mandates of mayor in the first round of local elections, according to the CEC. It is followed by the Democrat Party with 27 mandates, the Christian Democrat People’s Party with 20 mandates, the Social Democracy Party with 10 mandates etc. Representatives of 11 political organisations won mandates of mayor in the first round voting overall. A number of 58 mayors elected on June 3 ran as independent candidates. In the local elections of 2003, the PCRM got 368 mandates of mayor, the Electoral Bloc Social-Liberal Alliance “Moldova Noastra” - 191, PD – 73, the Electoral Bloc PSD-PSL – 44, etc. The independent candidates obtained then 157 mandates of mayor.
