The 66th National Boxing Championship brought together 68 pugilists. The competition is taking place at the Polyvalent Hall in Chisinau. According to sports commentators, the athletes from Chisinau and Grimancauti will struggle for the top place in the ten weight classes, IPN reports.

The boxers from Balti didn’t come to the championship. The president of the National Boxing Federation Vasile Chirtoca was saddened by this fact. “We will ask for explanations as Balti town has rich boxing traditions and must be present at all the national championships,” Chirtoca told the press.

The highest rated athlete of the competition Veaceslav Gojan, who medaled bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games, said he is sure he will obtain a new title of champion. “I will evidently not have powerful opponents, but I have anyway to fight and win,” he stated.

“I do not have great expectations of this championship. There will be probably nothing new as we know the leaders of the Moldovan boxing in all the categories,” said the coach of the national boxing squad Petru Caduc.

For the first time, the Moldovan boxers fight without protection hats. This is in accordance with the new regulations imposed by the International Boxing Federation. The championship closes on November 23.
