6 out of 10 Moldovans own a bank account. Moldova is at bottom of European rankings

Some 65% of the Moldovans had a bank account in 2021, compared to 18% in 2014. According to the World Bank, the Republic of Moldova was placed at the bottom of the global account ownership rankings, the European average being over 80%. The data were presented by Dorel Noroc, president of the Moldovan Banks Association, at the National Forum "Financial Education for All", IPN reports.

According to the presented data, in the rankings Moldova is followed by Kosovo, Armenia, and Albania where every second person owns a bank account.

Denmark, Germany and Austria are at the top of the ranking. In these countries, almost 100% of the people over the age of 15 own a bank account.

Among the factors that influence Moldova’s position in the rankings, the president of the Moldovan Banks Association mentioned the people’s trust in banking institutions, the way in which the authorities promote financial education, the economy, household incomes, access to technologies and innovation.
