Some 47% of Moldova’s population has a positive opinion about the Russian loan of €200 million. 22% of the respondents of a poll have a neutral opinion, while 15% have a negative attitude. Most of those polled consider the loan, if this is disbursed, should be spent primarily on paying pensions and salaries to public sector employees and on financing the healthcare system. Fewer believe the loan should be spent on the repair of roads, support for the business community and investments in the national economy, shows the May issue of the Electoral Barometer 2020 carried out by Date Inteligente SRL (iData) during April 25 – May 4.

In a news conference at IPN, iData executive director Mihai Bologan said 29% of those surveyed consider that by this loan Russia will control things in the Republic of Moldova. 24% think this will support the state budget, while 18% believe the money will help to continue economic development projects.

35% of the respondents said the Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend the law to ratify the €200 million lending agreement with Russia is politically influenced, while 26% believe this is a correct decision. 18% think the blame for such a decision is borne by the Action and Solidarity Party, 11% by the Pro Moldova group, while 5% by the members of the Constitutional Court.

Also, the poll says that among the politicians who are trusted by the population the most are President Igor Dodon with 24.2%, PAS leader Maia Sandu with 11.4% and “Our Party” leader Renato Usatyi with 2.4%. Over 36% of the respondents do not trust anyone. If snap parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 26.3% of those questioned would vote for the PSRM, 12.4% for the PAS, 4.5% for the PDM, 3.7% for the PPPDA and 3.7% for “Our Party”.

Asked about the obeying of the rules to protect against COVID-19, about 84% of those polled said this is important or very important. Mihai Bologan said it is noticed that the people in general try to obey the rules. 87% said they don’t know anyone who was or is infected with COVID-19. Cumulatively, 12% said they have an infected relative or acquaintance.

Some 45% of those surveyed said their incomes during the quarantine period remained the same, 29% said they decreased significantly, 15% said they declined slightly, while 1% said they rose.

Asked how long it will take for Moldova’s economy to return to the level of February 2020, 25% of the respondents answered “more than two years”, while less than 10% said “less than half a year”.

The poll covered a sample of 931 respondents from 325 localities. The margin of sampling error is ± 3.2%.
