Thirty-six couples decided to unite their destinies February 24, when Dragobete is celebrated, by registering their marriage at civil status services. According to the Public Services Agency, the number of couples is double compared to the same day last year, when 18 marriages were registered, IPN reports.

"This special day marks not only love, but also the courage to start a new journey as a couple. The PSA sincerely congratulates all lovers and wishes them a solid home, harmony and a life full of love and accomplishments," reads a message from the institution.

In the Romanian tradition, Dragobete is a mythological deity similar to Eros or Cupid. Dragobete is Dochia's son, a handsome and loving man who welcomes the spring the first. Dragobete does not have the gentleness of Saint Valentine in the Catholic tradition, being treated as a mischievous and impetuous man.
