A consignment of 25,000 books in the Romanian language were donated by the Government of Romania to Moldovan libraries. Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta made the donation during his visit to Moldova on August 27, on the Independence Day, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué of the Government’s press service, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca for the first time discussed the shortage of Romanian books in the Moldovan pre-university education institutions and libraries with Victor Ponta on December 22, 2013, when he was informed about the assistance of €20 million from the Government of Romania for reconstructing kindergartens in Moldova. “What is taking place today is a natural reaction of our friend Victor Ponta, supported by his colleagues from the Government of Romania. I’m convinced that this donation of books is only a start,” said the Moldovan Premier.

Victor Ponta said the Romanian universities continue to collect books in the Romanian language, which will be donated to Moldova. “Furthermore, I think that one of the most important projects of Romania, of which the teachers and children in Moldova should benefit, is the compilation and access to digital textbooks. We can and should do many other things of the kind,” stated Victor Ponta.

The consignment consists of over 100 book titles of universal, classical and Romanian literature from the most prestigious publishing houses of Romania.
