A 25-year-old man who two years ago robbed, raped and set fire to a girl aged 11 in a corn field in Drochia district got 25 years, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The investigators established that in July 2013, the victim went to meet her father who had pastured a herd of cows. She was attacked by an individual, who robbed her of her golden earrings and cross and then took her to a corn field and raped her there. Afterward, the attacker strangled her and, thinking that she was dead, set fire to her in order to hide the crime. But the girl was alive and escaped.
The culprit is from Soroca district, but was visiting his relatives in Drochia at that time. He was arrested in Soroca several days after the incident. The Balti Appeals Court sentenced the man to 25 years in jail and obliged him to pay 103,000 lei damages to the injured party.
The decision can be appealed to a higher court.
