The year 2019 was a tumultuous political year and one that showed the politicians do not learn from history, while society should always start from the beginning, with geopolitics being the dominant factor, historian and publicist Gheorghe Cojocarun stated in an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service. According to him, in Moldova’s recent history there was no other year when three governments would be removed one after another and two governments would be formed at a distance of not even half a year, IPN reports.
According to him, in 2019 the frail democracy was exposed to many challenges “It is a crisis that has deep roots in our society. It is a society dominated by different political orientations where no median line was found whereby to develop further. The society is divided, while the political parties reflect this state of division,” noted Gheorghe Cojocaru.
The historian said the leaders of the four parliamentary parties had polemics and reproached each other for particular gestures. They are not ready for a fundamental change in the arrangement of society. They each follow their own agenda and there is no common agenda that would enjoy sustainable parliamentary support. And this is the key problem faced now by parties and their administration.
The projects announced by the current government are also electoral in character. If these are successful, the current President’s chances will probably increase, if there are no other moves that would counteract an eventual ascent of the President. The context can yet change and it was seen in the past that the context in Moldova can be easily disrupted and political, socioeconomic surprises can appear and all these things do not allow making a clear forecast as to the results of the future presidential elections.
”It’s yet clear that the main players who will undertake this burden of the struggle for the post of President will have to present an agenda to the ordinary voter, which would help attract these electoral sympathies at internal, socioeconomic levels and, first of all, at foreign level as it is hard to imagine that the projected votes could be obtained at the next presidential elections without this external agenda,” stated Gheorghe Cojocaru.
