177,000 persons have disabilities in Moldova

The persons with disabilities in Moldova represent about 7% of the country’s population. On January 1, 2020, according to the data of the National House of Social Insurance, the persons with disabilities in Moldova constituted 177,000. Of them, 10,700 were children and teens. Almost each seventh person with disabilities had a severe disability, the National Bureau of Statistic said in connection with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that is annually marked on December 3, IPN reports.

The women represented almost 52% of the persons with disabilities.

Most of the persons with disabilities benefit from a disability pension. Slightly over 71% of the persons with disabilities who are under the supervision of social insurance bodies were pensioners receiving disability pensions, while almost 29% were recipients of allowances.

The persons with disabilities from rural areas constituted 57%, up 5.5% percentage points on January 1, 2016.

The disability among pensioners appears most often after the age of 55. Among pensioners with disabilities, the persons aged between 55 and 64 represented 44.1%, while those aged between 30 and 54 – 31.6%.

The number of persons who are classed as disabled for the first time has increased. About 17,200 persons asked the National Council for Disability and Work Capacity Determination in 2019 to recognize their disability. Of these, 15,100 or 88% were classed as disabled for the first time, with 13,700 being adults, while 1,400 being children.
