As this spring’s afforestation campaign is set to start on March 10, President Maia Sandu urges the public to get involved in the effort “for a greener country and a healthy environment”.

“More forests mean enough water in wells and rivers, cleaner air, more fertile soil, and all of this means a healthy and prosperous future for us and our children”, the president said in an address to the public.

Trees will be planted on new land in addition to maintenance work on last year’s plantations. About 13 million oak, elm and acacia trees are to be planted as part of the effort.

The National Forest Extension and Rehabilitation Plan, implemented under the patronage of the President, foresees the creation of new forests on a total area of 145,000 hectares over a period of ten years.

Earlier this week, the Government has formally initiated negotiations on a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of the Environment, the Forestry Society and the French Development Agency (AFD) to enable a 40 million euros Forestry Reform Program in 2024-2025. The AFD will also grant 1.2 million euros in technical assistance to help implement the program.
