More than 5,000 knee and hip replacement operations were performed in 2023 in the framework of the locomotor prosthesis program. These operations are financed with money from mandatory health insurance funds, IPN reports.

The operations were performed in 21 medical institutions contracted by the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM). “The average cost of a treated case, covered by mandatory medical insurance, was over 65,000 lei. This amount also includes expensive consumables. The free prosthetic surgery is intended for insured persons who have medical indications for such an operation and are on waiting lists,” said CNAM.

The Company also said that it took a number of actions and the waiting time for prosthetic surgeries halved from three years in 2022 to a year and a half today.

The funds planned in 2024 for prosthetic musculoskeletal surgery, including expensive consumables, total about 414 million lei for over 6,000 cases.
