Media organisations in Moldova are concerned about violations at Antena C

The media NGOs in Moldova are deeply concerned about the crisis situation that emerged in the process of reorganising the radio station “Antena C”. According to a joint statement of media NGOs, quoted by Info-Prim Neo, although the Broadcasting Code clearly stipulates that after reorganising the two public stations Antena C and Euro TV Chisinau, “their liquidation shall not be allowed…, ensuring the development of a pluralistic environment for the development of the audiovisual field”, the new manager of Antena C ordered on February 5 to suspend the broadcasting schedule, thus excluding most of well-known and appreciated programmes among the listeners, “Antena C” being one of the few radio stations that broadcasted debates and critical analyses of the government. The statement also says that the staff was informed that according to the new organisation chart, “Antena C” will have a director, two vice-directors, two accountants, a newsreader, a reporter, 40 publicity agents, and six technicians, which will implicitly lead to the transformation of the entire team working at this radio station into a team of advertisement agents. Thus, defying the legal provisions and public interest, the new administration deprives the staff of the right to work in the field. In fact, the new administration’s actions meant the sacking of 25 journalists out of those 27 working at Antena C at present, the statement underlines. Media NGOs trust that the responsible authorities in the terms of and by observing the provisions of the Law will get involved in redressing the situation without delay. At the same time, the statement warns the national and international public opinion about the violations of democratic principles in the case of Antena C, and about the attempts of certain interest groups to monopolise and standardise the broadcasters in Moldova. The media organisations’ statement is signed by the Association of Electronic Media APEL, Independent Press Association, Independent Journalism Centre, Monitor Media Agency, Access-Info Centre, Centre of Journalistic Investigations, Press Freedom Committee, Journalists Union of Moldova, Association of Economist Journalists, and Centre of Young Journalists of Moldova.
