The President of Hungary, Tam\u00e1s Sulyok, has enacted the 17th amendment to the Constitution, which ends his own term prematurely. The decision comes just days after the Parliament, dominated by Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar’s Tisza party, adopted the constitutional amendment as part of a broad package of institutional reforms, reports Reuters<\/a>, quoted by IPN.<\/p>\n\n

In a video message, Sulyok stated that he signed the law because he had “no constitutional means” to prevent it from coming into effect, although he believes that the amendment represents a blow to the rule of law and democratic values. Tam\u00e1s Sulyok’s mandate will end Sunday night, and the duties of the head of state will be taken over on an interim basis Monday morning by the Speaker of the Parliament, \u00c1gnes Forsthoffer, until the legislature elects a new head of state.<\/p>\n\n

Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar welcomed the enactment of the amendment, stating that this has removed the “last obstacle” in the way of implementing the reforms promised after the resounding victory in the parliamentary elections in April.
