The former Foreign Minister of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, is giving up his parliamentary mandate won in the April elections to work for the Chinese car manufacturer BYD. He made the announcement on a social network where he wrote that he will handle the company’s foreign relations, reports IPN.<\/p>\n\n
Peter Szijjarto has been a deputy for 24 years and a foreign minister for 12 years in the governments led by Viktor Orban. He had won his seventh term as a deputy in the parliamentary elections in April, but he was absent from most of the sessions of the new Parliament. Moreover, after the Fidesz party lost the elections, Szijjarto disappeared from the public space and the online environment.<\/p>\n\n
In 2023, Peter Szijjarto, then foreign minister, announced the opening in Hungary of the first BYD factory in Europe, a move that allowed the company to evade the EU’s customs duties on the import of electric cars from China. Moreover, Szijjarto played a crucial role in bringing BYD to Hungary and declared at the time that it would be one of the largest investments ever made in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n
Indeed, the former Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban and the former Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, have consistently opposed the EU’s proposals to impose customs duties on Chinese car manufacturers and have supported Chinese investments in Europe. Several companies from China currently have factories open for the production of batteries for electric vehicles in Hungary.
