The public television and radio in Hungary have interrupted their news broadcasts, after the new government led by P\u00e9ter Magyar replaced the interim leadership of the media institutions and initiated a comprehensive reform of the public information system. Instead of news bulletins, the stations broadcasted an apology message to viewers and listeners for the years in which they transmitted information considered political propaganda, reports IPN.<\/p>\n\n

The Budapest government argues that the measure is necessary to transform the public media into an independent and credible institution, after 16 years during which it was under the influence of former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n and his party, Fidesz. Several editors and newsroom managers have been dismissed, and news programs will remain suspended until the institutions are completely reorganized, Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n\n

In the message displayed on the screen, the new management conveyed that “public media cannot lie” and apologized for past misinformation. Entertainment programs and other shows continued to be broadcast, but news bulletins were temporarily removed from the schedule.<\/p>\n\n

The reform of the public media was one of the main electoral promises of P\u00e9ter Magyar, whose party won the parliamentary elections in April. The new prime minister has repeatedly compared the public press from the Orb\u00e1n era to a propaganda machine and promised to restore editorial independence and public trust.<\/p>\n\n

Former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n criticized the decision and described it as an arbitrary act, urging the public to follow the private channels close to the former government.
