The Republic of Moldova has received a batch of approximately 10 thousand doses of the anti-meningococcal vaccine, intended to prevent infection with the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium. The vaccine will be distributed throughout the country and is recommended for infants aged between 7 and 11 months, reports IPN.<\/p>\n\n
The National Agency for Public Health specifies that meningococcal infection is a serious bacterial disease that progresses rapidly and can lead to meningitis, that is, inflammation of the brain membranes, or to septicemia – a generalized blood infection.<\/p>\n\n
According to data presented by ANSP, last year, in Moldova, there were 16 cases of meningococcal infection, of which 15 were in children. Four of the infected children died. At the European level, about 3 thousand cases are reported annually, and the mortality rate can even reach 20%.<\/p>\n\n
The Ministry of Health and ANSP urge parents to consult their family doctor about vaccination and to get informed from official sources.
