Three passengers have died and three are in quarantine on a cruise ship following an outbreak of hantavirus infection. The ship departed from southern Argentina, made stops in Antarctica and on Saint Helena, and is now anchored in Praia, the capital of the Republic of Cape Verde in Africa, according to IPN, citing the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

There are 241 people on board the ship, tourists and crew members. The first deceased passenger, a 70-year-old Dutchman, died on the ship and was disembarked during a stopover on the British island of Saint Helena. His 69-year-old wife fell ill and was transported to a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, but could not be saved. No details were provided about the third passenger who lost their life.<\/p>\n\n

The Cape Verdean authorities refused to allow the tourists to disembark, but sent medical teams on board. Doctors say that two crew members are in urgent need of medical care. The cruise line<\/a> has announced that it is in constant contact with local authorities, Dutch authorities and international organizations to provide assistance, monitor the situation and repatriate the deceased passengers.<\/p>\n\n

According to the World Health Organization, hantavirus is transmitted through rodent excrement and can cause severe respiratory symptoms. The infection is difficult to diagnose without laboratory tests, as the initial manifestations are similar to those of a cold or flu.
