Municipalities that will not voluntarily agree to amalgamate will not benefit from state financial support, and central authorities are considering firm measures to accelerate the process of local public administration reform. The statements were made by the Secretary General of the Government, Alexei Buzu, on the public television station, reports IPN.<\/p>\n\n
The official explained the difficult demographic and administrative situation in small localities, emphasizing that they are becoming increasingly difficult to manage due to population decline and lack of specialists.<\/p>\n\n
“The figures show very clearly. In small town halls, the depopulation rate is increasing. In localities with 1,200-1,600 citizens, the population number will decrease even more in 15 years. The tax base will shrink. In the local public administration of the Republic of Moldova, 20% of all public officials are active, but we’re talking about 50% of all retirees who are public officials. Therefore, it will be complicated to attract specialists and be competitive in that town hall”, Alexei Buzu declared during the “\u00cen Context” show on M1.<\/p>\n\n
The Secretary General of the Government warned that the authorities will not allow the blocking of the reform for political reasons and that localities should not suffer because of the indecision of local elected officials.<\/p>\n\n
“We do not want to reach the situation where the citizens of those localities are prisoners of political indecision. If the local elected officials do not wish to initiate this voluntary amalgamation process that comes with incentives, in the fall of this year the Government will propose a list of town halls and these town halls, simply, will be annexed to other town halls in the area. The town halls that will not voluntarily amalgamate, will not benefit from financial incentives”, said Alexei Buzu further.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of local public administration reform provides for the reduction of the number of districts from 32 to 10. Also, in the Republic of Moldova, there will no longer be mayoral offices managing fewer than 3,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
