Students and teachers in Moldova have limited knowledge about human and child rights, and only a small part of them acknowledge that these are equal and interdependent. The school barometer, presented by the Ministry of Education and Research, reveals worrying attitudes towards vulnerable groups, such as children with disabilities, reports IPN.<\/p>\n\n
According to the study, only 65% of students, parents and teachers know that human rights are acquired at birth. Almost a third have misconceptions: some teachers believe that rights are granted by the United Nations, while some parents and students think that they are earned along with the assumption of responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n
At the same time, 35% of students and 26% of parents do not know why children have additional rights. Only 17% of students and 41% of teachers understand that all rights are interdependent. The majority of respondents perceive the right to life as superior to all other rights.<\/p>\n\n
The barometer also shows that students and parents believe that parents are primarily responsible for ensuring children’s rights, while teachers point to state authorities. School remains the main source of information for over 80% of students and 90% of teachers, followed by family, social media, television and extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n\n
The MEC research, conducted on a nationally representative sample, included over 4,200 students, 1,570 parents, 2,463 teachers and 95 principals from 110 schools in 71 locations. The Minister of Education specified that the barometer will be conducted every two years.<\/p>\n\n
