Romanian magistrates will take over in February the case in which the former deputy director of the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Balan, arrested four months ago for allegedly disclosing state secrets related to Romania to KGB officers from Belarus, is accused of treason. The criminal trial is in the investigation phase, and the indictment is expected to be released in February. The confirmation was made for IPN by the chief prosecutor of the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism Offenses in Romania, Alina Albu.<\/p>\n\n

Given the fact that Alexandru Balan has dual citizenship, Moldovan and Romanian, he is being investigated as a Romanian citizen, Alina Albu clarified.<\/p>\n\n

Until the case reaches the court, Alexandru B\u0103lan remains in preventive detention. The measure was extended for a month, from January 8, by the High Court of Cassation and Justice in Bucharest.<\/p>\n\n

The former deputy head of the SIS was arrested<\/a> on September 8, 2025, in Timi\u0219oara. He is accused of having met in Budapest with KGB officers from Belarus during 2024-2025 and allegedly disclosed state secrets related to Romania. According to the investigation, there are reasonable suspicions that the purpose of the meetings was to transmit instructions and make payments for services rendered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
