A waste sorting station was inaugurated today in Calugar village, near Falesti town, to serve 11 surrounding villages and the town itself, IPN reports.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, who was on a working visit in the district of Falesti. He said that such projects contribute to the modernization and sustainable development of the country.
The Calugar station was built as part of a project funded by the European Union. “With money offered by the European Union, we rehabilitated roads and water supply systems, community centers and health centers, schools and kindergartens”, he noted.
Leanca added that improved environment management and adoption of international standards in the field is a commitment that Moldova has assumed to fulfill on the path towards European integration.
The plastic, glass and paper waste sorted at the Calugar station will reach the specialized processing facilities across the country, said Ion Rotaru, chief engineer at the Falesti Utilities Company.
The project had a cost of 5 lei lei.
“The Cross-border Improvement of Solid Municipal Waste Management in Moldova, Romania and Ukraine (SMWM)” Project was started in 2012. Its objective is to develop long term solutions to the environmental problems faced by border areas by improving the solid municipal waste management systems.
By 2027, the Moldovan authorities plan to create an European waste collection and disposal system and reduce the number of landfill sites.
