During two months, UNICEF Moldova will be carrying out the nationwide campaign “25 years with the right . With the child’s right” to mark thus 25 years of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The campaign was launched on October 1 by a football match that brought together on the same stadium 30 players, boys and girls, aged between 12 and 14. The spectators included about 300 children, most of whom were from socially deprived families and from residential institutions from 10 districts of the country, IPN reports.
“We chose to launch the campaign by a football match because in football all the children are equal. The Convention on the Rights of the Child provides that all the children, regardless of the social status, disability, ethnicity or place of residence, have equal rights. We, the grownups, parents and decision makers from the whole community bear responsibility before the children as we must make sure that they have a happy childhood and offer them the chance of a healthy future,” UNICEF Representative in Moldova Nune Mangasaryan said in the launch of the event.
The campaign “25 years with the right. With the child’s right” aims to take stock of the main accomplishments obtained in the field of children’s rights over the last two decades and to draw attention to the problems faced by children. The campaign is part of the global events organized by UNICEF this year, which was declared the Year of Innovations for Children.
On the 25th anniversary of the Convention, a series of public events will be staged in Moldova with the involvement of children and opinion leaders. There will be broadcast videos and held public debates to draw attention to the different problems experienced by children. The campaign will end on November 20, when the Convention was created. On this day, UNICEF will award children’s rights champions in Moldova.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was ratified by Moldova on February 25, 1993.
