Three doctors of Mother and Child Institute convicted of malpractice

A gynecologist-obstetrician, the chief midwife and the head of studies of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Section of the Mother and Child Institute were put on probation for a two-year period for malpractice. These were also banned from practicing medicine for a four-year period. The conviction decision was passed by the Botanica Court on August 13. Another obstetrician who was on guard was acquitted. The prosecutors intend to challenge the acquittal decision and to demand harsher punishments for the other three, IPN reports.

According to the investigators, in October 2011, the culprits didn’t appropriately monitor a woman’s labor, didn’t establish that the baby was in a serious state and performed the procedures to resuscitate the newborn with delay. As a result of the inaction of doctors, the baby suffered serious obstetric asphyxiation and remained with deficiencies. At the start of this year, the child died.

The conclusion of the Legal Medicine Center of Chisinau shows the doctors are not to blame in this case. The prosecutors ordered the same examination at the National Legal Medicine Institute of Bucharest, which determined that the doctors didn’t appropriately monitor the labor and difficulties could have been avoided by resorting to a caesarian section.
