Tense relations in family and at school make children think about suicide

The tense relations in the family and at school are the factors that influence the self-destructive behavior of children most of all. The parents’ divorce, the conflict between generations or even the transfer to another education institution are the most often reasons for which the children, especially the teens, think about killing themselves. 90% of the students who attend the Chisinau Psycho-Socio-Pedagogical Center of the General Division of Education, Youth and Sport attempted suicide, IPN reports.

In a seminar that involved teachers, the Center’s acting director Svetlana Gorea spoke about the importance of anti-depressive treatment for these children. When a suicide attempt is made, the child must obligatorily discuss with specialists.

Psychologists say the transfer to another school at the age of 12-15 has the greatest impact on the child. If the transfer is necessary, it should better take place in the fifth or ninth grade.

Svetlana Gorea underlined that the suicide attempts among teens are caused by the lack of communication. The parents are busier at work and allot less time to the discussions with the own children. “It’s not true that suicides are more often committed by teens. However, it’s hard to establish the exact number of attempts owing to the parents who hide the problem,” she added.

Four children who attempted suicide were offered consultancy at the Psycho-Socio-Pedagogical Center so far this year. Last year this figure stood at 12. Most of the suicide attempts are committed in spring and in autumn. Despite the difficult economic situation, Svetlana Gorea said that Moldova is not among the countries with the highest number of cases of suicide among teens.
