The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, is making an official visit to the Republic of Moldova on Monday, July 20, at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. This is the first visit of an Indian head of state to Moldova since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1992, reports IPN.

During the meeting, Maia Sandu and Droupadi Murmu will analyze the state of bilateral relations and will discuss the expansion of cooperation in various fields. On the discussion agenda is the facilitation of access for Moldovan products to the Indian market, attracting investments from India, as well as collaboration in the field of renewable energy and digital transformation.

After the meeting, the two heads of state will hold press statements. They will also participate in the opening of the Moldova-India Business Forum, organized by the Investment Agency. The event will bring together representatives of the business environment from both countries, including a delegation of approximately 30 businessmen from India.

The visit’s agenda also includes a meeting of the President of India with the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, and with members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as a meeting with members of the Indian community in the Republic of Moldova.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and India were established on March 20, 1992. According to the presidency, in recent years, cooperation between the two states has intensified through the resumption of bilateral political consultations, the inauguration of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in New Delhi, and the expansion of collaboration in areas such as trade, energy and education.

The Information and Security Service will be able to order the removal of online content of a terrorist nature. A bill drafted by the ISS and promoted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs provides for the creation of a mechanism for rapid removal of this type of content and the expansion of the country’s president’s powers in coordinating measures to prevent and combat terrorism. The document is subject to public consultation, reports IPN.

According to the project, service providers will need to remove or block access to online content of a terrorist nature within a maximum of one hour from receiving the order issued by authorities. The document also establishes the conditions under which the execution of the order can be postponed for objective reasons, as well as the mandatory information that it must contain.

The authors of the project argue that the current legal mechanism does not meet European standards and does not sufficiently regulate cooperation with service providers, collaboration with Europol, and the procedures for rapid removal of terrorist content from the online environment.

The explanatory note mentions that terrorist groups use online platforms for propaganda, radicalization and recruitment, and the distribution of this type of content can affect national security and public order.

The project also provides for the designation of the country’s president as the coordinator of activities for the prevention and combating of terrorism, the right to challenge in court the inclusion on the list of persons involved in terrorist activities, as well as the clarification of some preventive measures applied by SIS.

Update: Valentin Gaidarji has been elected president of the Gagauz People’s Assembly, with the vote of 18 deputies.

Initial news: The deputies of the Gagauz People’s Assembly have accepted the resignation of Nicolai Ormanji from the position of interim president of the Comrat legislature. After the vote, the meeting was led by Vice President Gheorghe Leiciu, who temporarily exercises the leadership duties of the People’s Assembly. The agenda includes the election of a new president, reports the IPN correspondent from Gagauzia.

Two candidates were proposed: Vice President Gheorghe Leiciu and Valentin Gaidarji, the one who previously proposed an “alternative” document, in opposition to the compromise one, and which, according to the authors, could have unlocked the electoral crisis in Gagauzia. Currently, the Commission is preparing the minutes and the necessary bulletins for the conduct of the vote.

Ormanji’s resignation was submitted against the backdrop of the prolonged institutional crisis in the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia. Previously, he had stated that it was necessary to unblock the legislative activity and legitimize the eighth legislature by adopting a provisional electoral regulation, agreed upon during the negotiations between Comrat and Chisinau. However, the deputies blocked the compromise document, which was supposed to regulate the conduct of the regional elections in 2026.

On the other hand, the former president of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, Dmitri Constantinov, is wanted. National and international search measures have been issued in his name, including through Interpol. Constantinov was sentenced by the Comrat Court to 12 years in prison in a case involving abuse of office and embezzlement of funds. According to the investigation, the damage caused by the acts committed during the period 2017-2020 exceeds 46 million lei. At the time of sentencing, Constantinov did not appear in court. Law enforcement officials mention that the former official may be in the Transnistrian region.

Ilie Bolojan was elected on Sunday as the president of the National Liberal Party for a four-year term, during the extraordinary Congress, which was attended by over 1,800 delegates. Out of the 1,842 votes cast, Bolojan received 1,769 votes, reports IPN.

In his speech, the liberal leader asserted that PNL is capable of governing without compromises and promoting a project for modernizing Romania. Bolojan argued that the liberals have responsibly managed the governance and have paid a political price for the difficult measures adopted.

The Congress unanimously adopted two important resolutions. The first stipulates that the PNL will no longer participate in a governing coalition with the PSD, and any member who supports such a political formula risks expulsion from the party.

The second resolution targets Lucian Bode, Rares Bogdan, Adrian Vestea, Hubert Thuma, and Alina Gorghiu, whom the congress asked to resign from the party by Monday, otherwise, the exclusion procedures will be initiated. The liberal leaders accuse them of repeatedly violating the decisions of the formation and acting against the interests of the party.

The extraordinary congress of the PNL took place in a climate of internal tensions and political repositioning, following the motion of censure filed by PSD and AUR, as a result of which the Bolojan Government was dismissed, and after one of the liberal leaders, Adrian Vestea, was appointed Prime Minister by President Nicusor Dan, without consulting the PNL.

Judge Ana Cucerescu has been selected for the position of judge at the Supreme Court of Justice. Alongside her, the competition for the vacant positions at the CSJ was also promoted by the law doctor Elena Croitor. The Superior Council of Magistracy is set to forward the appointment proposals to President Maia Sandu, reports IPN.

According to the CSM, the selection was conducted in accordance with legal provisions, evaluating the professional portfolios of the candidates, their accumulated experience, integrity and the results obtained in the competition.

Ana Cucerescu works at the Chisinau Court and has over 14 years of experience in the judicial system. The magistrate is known for examining high-profile cases. She was part of the panel that examined the bank fraud case, in which Vlad Plahotniuc was convicted, as well as the case involving the illegal financing of the former Shor party, in which the governor of Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutul, was convicted.

Elena Croitor is a Doctor of Law and has been active in recent years in the field of justice and judicial system reform. Between 2021 and 2025, she held the positions of Principal Legal Consultant and Senior Legal Advisor within the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative Moldova. Previously, she was the Principal Consultant at the Ministry of Justice, worked at the Institute of Penal Reforms, and coordinated projects in the field of juvenile justice. Additionally, for over 14 years, she taught at the Law Faculty of the State University of Moldova.

According to the legislation, the Supreme Court of Justice is composed of 20 judges. In February 2023, several magistrates from the CSJ left the system, and experts explained these chain resignations by the launch of the process of verifying the integrity of judges. In March, nine judge positions remained vacant at the supreme court.

Igor Grosu was re-elected as the president of the Action and Solidarity Party, during the fourth Congress of the party, which was attended by over 900 delegates with voting rights. During the event, the PAS priorities for the coming years were presented, among which are the modernization of public administration, increasing economic competitiveness, and accelerating the process of joining the European Union, reports IPN.

At the same congress, the new leadership team of the party was elected for a four-year term. The roles of vice-presidents of the PAS were assigned to the following people: Doina Gherman, Veronica Roșca, Mihai Popsoi, Vladimir Bolea, Radu Marian, Dan Perciun, Virgil Pislariuc. Also, the leadership team included Ion Groza, Lilian Carp, Adrian Balutel, Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, Gheorghe Hajder, Larisa Voloh, Igor Chiriac, and Tatiana Cucuietu. The position of general secretary was taken over by Andrei Rusanovschi.

In his speech, Igor Grosu spoke about the 10 years of activity of the formation, the implemented reforms and the objective of continuing the European path, emphasizing that Moldova is on the right track. “PAS is a pro-European, strong party, which has the duty to raise the level of prosperity of the Republic of Moldova and to fulfill the desire to join the EU. PAS must continue to grow, to strengthen, to become a traditional party, to continue to bring valuable people into the party,” mentioned Igor Grosu.

President Maia Sandu has released a video message, highlighting the unity and responsibility of the political team, as well as the importance of continuing reforms and the European path. “I am proud of what we have achieved together and I am grateful to all those who have contributed to the liberation of the country from corruption, bringing the Republic of Moldova out of isolation and putting it on the right path on the good side of history,” Maia Sandu mentioned.

Foreign officials also participated in the congress, among them the interim Prime Minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, leader of the National Liberal Party. He congratulated the Republic of Moldova for opening accession negotiations with the European Union, appreciating that it is an important step that will remain in history and to which the current government has contributed.

Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan stated that PAS is the only democratic party in Europe that has won the last two elections with an absolute majority. He described the formation as a model for the entire European People’s Party and for Europe. The official also highlighted the European journey of the Republic of Moldova – from the submission of the application for membership, obtaining the status of candidate country, and up to the decision to open accession negotiations – noting that these were well prepared in recent months.

The Action and Solidarity Party was founded in 2016 and was led until 2020 by Maia Sandu, who resigned from her position following her election as the country’s president. The interim was taken over by Igor Grosu, who was subsequently elected president of the PAS at the congress in May 2022.

Sergiu Caraman has been re-elected as the president of the Superior Council of Magistracy for the next two years. Aliona Miron, a member of the CSM, also competed for this position, reports IPN.

During the program presentation at Tuesday’s meeting, Aliona Miron criticized the level of coordination of the institution with the other state authorities. According to her, in recent years there have been several legislative projects regarding the judicial system that were not consulted with the CSM.

“We are limping in the institutional dialogue with the legislative and executive power”, declared Aliona Miron, adding that the council president must contribute to strengthening trust in the judicial system and defending the independence of judges.

In turn, Sergiu Caraman acknowledged that his mandate unfolded in a difficult context, but he highlighted the results achieved by the institution. He stated that, despite the challenges, the reconstruction of the CSM team was successful and unprecedented achievements for the institution were recorded.

Referring to the lack of consultations on some legislative initiatives, Sergiu Caraman admitted the existence of such situations, considering them more of an institutional challenge rather than a failure of dialogue between the CSM and authorities.

Diana Caraman was elected president of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova, during the eleventh Congress of the party. At the same time, the former leader of the PCRM for over three decades, Vladimir Voronin, was designated honorary president of the party, a position established through the amendment of the party’s statute, reports IPN.

The Congress brought together 254 delegates from the territorial organizations of the party from across the country. During the meeting, reports from the Central Committee and the Central Revision Commission for the period 2021-2026 were presented and examined. The delegates approved a new edition of the PCRM Program, arguing that the document needed to be adapted to the political, economic, and social changes that have occurred in the last two decades. At the same time, amendments and additions to the party’s statute were adopted.

One of the main points on the congress agenda was the establishment of the honorary presidency of the PCRM. Unanimously elected to this position was Vladimir Voronin, the founder of the party and its leader since the formation of the group.

The Congress also elected a new composition of the Central Committee and the Central Revision Commission. In the first plenary of the new Central Committee, Constantin Staris and Vladimir Telnov were elected as secretaries. In the resolution adopted at the end of the proceedings, the participants reaffirmed the party’s intention to actively participate in the country’s political life and to promote the principles of statehood, sovereignty and social justice.
