Every second young person in the Republic of Moldova intends to have a child in the next three years, but the decision depends on the existence of financial stability, owning a home, and having a compatible partner. The data is found in a study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), presented on the occasion of World Population Day, marked on July 11, reports IPN.

The Republic of Moldova is one of the 73 countries included in the global study on demographic future, conducted among over 100,000 young people aged between 18 and 39 years old. In Moldova, 867 young people were surveyed.

The research shows that young people do not give up on the idea of family and children, but they delay this stage until they reach a level of economic stability. A secure job, a home, and financial security are among the main conditions they consider necessary before becoming parents.

The same conclusions were expressed during a dialogue organized by UNFPA in Chisinau, where participants noted that the establishment of a family is closely linked to the economic situation.

At the regional level, 79% of young people say they want to get married, and 87% state that the main reason they want to become parents is the joy and fulfillment provided by family. Most of them want two or more children, but in reality, they end up having fewer.

According to the study, young people from Eastern Europe and Central Asia follow a similar path before becoming parents: first a stable job, then their own home and a life partner, and later children. The lack of any of these conditions leads to the postponement of family plans.

The global study on demographic future was conducted in 2025 in 73 countries, including 11 states and territories from Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
