Work has begun on the arrangement of a temporary pre-boarding area for passengers waiting for bus transportation to aircraft at the “Eugen Doga” Chișinău International Airport. According to the airport administration, the new space will help reduce congestion in the terminal and streamline the boarding process, especially during periods of heavy traffic, reports IPN.

The new area will be covered and equipped with lighting and air conditioning systems, to ensure better comfort conditions in the short interval between the completion of boarding procedures and getting on the buses.

According to the airport administration, such temporary zones are also used by other international airports when it is necessary to manage a large number of passengers and optimize operational flows.

The project was developed following consultations with handling operators and structures involved in airport activity, to identify more efficient solutions for organizing passenger flows.

The works will be carried out at an accelerated pace, and the area is expected to become operational in the shortest possible time. The arrangement is part of the measures taken by the airport to adapt the infrastructure to the increase in passenger traffic, until the completion of the terminal expansion project.

The negotiators of the European Parliament and those of the Council of the European Union have reached a provisional agreement on updating the rights of air passengers. Thus, compensation procedures will be simplified and will have clearer rules, while the amount and conditions for granting compensation will be maintained, reports IPN.

During a press conference held in Strasbourg, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated that the provisional agreement facilitates the exercise of passenger rights and the request for compensation in case of flight disruptions, maintaining the current threshold of three hours delay and the current level of compensations.

Alexis Vafeades, the Minister of Transport of Cyprus, has characterized the decision as a major success for passengers, the aviation sector, and the EU as a whole. According to him, the agreement introduces clearer obligations regarding the information and assistance provided to travelers.

The European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, asserts that the agreement provides a balance between passenger protection and airline competitiveness, contributing to a more efficient and predictable aviation sector.

The document provides for additional protection measures for passengers with disabilities, as well as greater transparency regarding the cost of air travel. According to the new rules, displayed prices for flights will need to include hand luggage, providing passengers with clearer information right from the moment of booking.

To come into effect, the provisional agreement must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

Wizz Air will increase the frequency of flights from the Republic of Moldova to 10 European destinations, and the company will allocate a fifth aircraft to its base in Chisinau. The statement was made by the company’s commercial director, Ian Malin, during a press conference, reports IPN.

According to the company, the new aircraft will begin operating flights from Chisinau starting September 18. At the same time, there will be more frequent flights to several European destinations, including Paris, Berlin, Bologna, Venice, Brussels, Prague, Milan Bergamo, Larnaca, Verona, and Nice. For some routes, the flights will become daily.

Ian Malin stated that the expansion of capacity comes in the context of increasing demand for travel and aims to offer more flexibility to passengers from the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, the administrator of the “Eugen Doga” Chisinau International Airport, Sergiu Spoiala, stated that the allocation of the fifth aircraft reaffirms the company’s confidence in the potential of the aviation market in Moldova and in the development of the airport as a regional connectivity hub.

Currently, from the Republic of Moldova, Wizz Air operates flights to 35 destinations in 16 countries. The company estimates that it will surpass the threshold of 3 million passengers transported this calendar year. Moreover, Wizz Air claims to hold approximately 62% of the aviation market share in the Republic of Moldova.

A hospital in the Netherlands has placed 12 healthcare workers under quarantine for six weeks after they violated strict safety procedures while testing samples from a patient with hantavirus. Dutch authorities assure the public that the risk of the infection spreading is low, according to IPN, citing Reuters.

The Dutch Health Minister, Sophie Hermans, stated that there are low chances that the medical staff might have been contaminated, but quarantine was decided upon for safety reasons.

In the meantime, the World Health Organization has updated the rising tally of confirmed hantavirus cases: there are already nine infected tourists who have traveled with the cruise ship. The head of the UN agency stated that new cases are expected because the virus’s incubation period is long. However, he mentioned that it is not a pandemic and the current situation cannot be compared to that caused by COVID-19.

The cruise ship Hondius disembarked the last passengers on the Spanish island of Mallorca and set sail on Monday for the Dutch port of Rotterdam, where it will arrive on May 17th. Still on board are 25 crew members, a doctor and a nurse. Since the outbreak of the hantavirus epidemic at the end of April, 3 people have died.

The World Health Organization’s experts have said that the virus is usually transmitted from rodents. However, the strain detected in the passengers of the cruise ship is transmitted directly from human to human.

Passengers whose flights have been cancelled or significantly delayed can still receive compensation of up to 600 euros. Airline operators cannot invoke fuel price increases to avoid paying the compensations provided by European legislation. These provisions are found in a guide published by the European Commission, in the context of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and its impact on European aviation, reports IPN.

According to the document, the increase in fuel prices is part of the usual commercial risks of airlines and cannot be considered an “extraordinary circumstance”. Exceptions may only exist in the case of a physical and localized fuel shortage at a specific airport.

At the same time, airlines cannot retroactively introduce fuel surcharges for tickets already purchased. European rules stipulate that the final price of the ticket must be displayed at the time of purchase and that no additional charges applied after the reservation are permitted.

According to the European regulation EU261, affected passengers are entitled to compensation of 250, 400 or 600 euros, depending on the flight distance. Furthermore, they can request a refund of the ticket or rerouting for another flight, as well as airport assistance, including meals and accommodation, if they are forced to wait overnight.

The transportation sector in Belgium will be paralyzed on May 12th by a general strike organized by the three largest trade union confederations. Authorities warn that air, rail, and road transport across the entire country will be disrupted for 24 hours, reports IPN.

The aviation sector will be among the most affected. Several airports have cancelled all flights scheduled for Tuesday. The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the Kingdom of Belgium advises Moldovan citizens to periodically consult the updated information published by Brussels Airport regarding the status of flights and to contact the airlines for details.

And public transportation will also be affected. One of the railway operators, the public transportation company from Brussels, as well as regional operators have announced that their activity will be reduced, and some depots may remain closed.

Also, the international railway services Thalys and Eurostar will operate on a limited schedule, which could create difficulties for travelers transiting through Belgium. Multinational companies have begun to activate remote work regimes and recommend employees to avoid non-essential travel during this period.

Belgian trade unionists claim that the protest is directed against the social and economic policies of the Government, amidst dissatisfaction related to the cost of living and proposed changes to the pension system.

Two passengers from the Hondius cruise ship, where an outbreak of hantavirus infection occurred, are in serious condition at a hospital in the Netherlands after being evacuated from the ship. A third passenger, who is in stable condition, is being flown to a medical facility, reports IPN, citing the BBC.

Another 3 passengers who disembarked from the ship at the previous stopover are now in the United States and are being monitored. The World Health Organization has confirmed that another passenger who returned to Switzerland has tested positive and is hospitalized in a hospital in Zurich. The cruise ship, which still has 146 tourists from 23 countries on board, has left the Republic of Cape Verde and is heading towards the Canary Islands.

The WHO has stated that so far 8 cases have been identified, of which 3 are confirmed and 5 are suspected. Hantavirus is transmitted from rodents, but the analyses performed have shown that the infected passengers carry a deadly strain of hantavirus that is transmitted from person to person and is particularly found in South American countries.

The Hondius ship departed from Argentina on April 1st, then made a stopover on Saint Helena Island and headed towards the Republic of Cape Verde. On April 11th, a man died on board, and his ill wife was evacuated on April 24th to South Africa, where she passed away. On April 27th, another sick passenger was evacuated and taken to the hospital, and on May 2nd, another one died on board the ship.
