The early detection of lung cancer could be possible through a pilot screening program included in the new National Cancer Control Program for the years 2026-2030. The authorities are also considering the introduction of similar methods for other types of cancer, such as prostate, gastric or skin cancer. The document, published by the Ministry of Health for public consultations, includes measures regarding the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases, reports IPN.

According to the program, the authorities aim to increase the survival rate of adult patients from 47% to 52% and reduce the number of deaths in the first year after diagnosis from 20% to 15%. For children, the goal is to decrease this indicator from 10% to less than 8%.

One of the main objectives is to reduce the time from suspicion of a disease to the confirmation of the diagnosis and the initiation of treatment. In this regard, the Ministry of Health proposes the development of specialized centers for certain types of cancer, where multidisciplinary teams will quickly establish the therapeutic approach.

The program also provides for the creation of the National Oncology Service Coordination Unit, which will electronically monitor hospital waiting lists and the interval between diagnosis and the start of treatment.

The document includes investments in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and access to modern therapies, such as immunotherapy and targeted treatments. The Oncology Institute will remain the main center of the system, set to benefit from infrastructure development, additional equipment, and the strengthening of diagnostic and treatment capacities.

According to estimates from the Ministry of Health, the implementation of the program for the period 2026-2030 will require approximately 6.7 billion lei. Funding will come from the state budget, mandatory health insurance funds and external sources.

Patients diagnosed with oncological diseases can benefit from chemotherapy treatment as of today at the Orhei District Hospital. The Ministry of Health mentions that this measure is part of the process of decentralizing oncological services, so that patients can avoid trips to the Oncology Institute in Chisinau, reports IPN.

Thus, at the Orhei District Hospital, chemotherapy will be organized and provided to oncology patients, according to the medical indications established by specialists. Patients will be informed and guided by the doctors of the Oncology Institute, through the multidisciplinary oncology council.

According to the Ministry of Health, the costs for these services will be covered by the mandatory health insurance funds, through the contracts of the National Company for Medical Insurance.

Previously, chemotherapy services were established in the district hospitals of Floresti, Sangerei and Briceni, and the network is set to gradually expand to other districts.

Oncology patients from Floresti will no longer have to travel to Chisinau for chemotherapy sessions. Starting September 24, treatment can also be administered within the district hospital, announces the Ministry of Health. According to the authorities, this measure is part of the effort to decentralize oncology services, so that patients can benefit from medical care as close to home as possible, reports IPN.

The Ministry specifies in a press release that all expenses will be covered from the mandatory health insurance funds, through the contracts concluded with the National Medical Insurance Company.

A multidisciplinary oncology council, composed of doctors from the Oncology Institute in Chisinau, will continue to provide guidance and information to patients.

The authorities announce that, in a short time, patients from the Sangerei, Briceni, Orhei and Cahul districts will also be able to benefit from chemotherapy services in their local hospitals.

Alongside the hospital in Floresti, these are the first regional hospitals that will take on cases of medium severity oncology.

The model applied for the decentralization of oncological services is similar to the one previously implemented for stroke treatment, when regional medical centers are equipped with the necessary equipment and benefit from specialized staff.

In the case of oncology patients, chemotherapy sessions will be conducted on a day hospitalization basis and individuals will be monitored for several hours after the administration of the treatment.

In the Republic of Moldova, oncological diseases are the second leading cause of mortality, following cardiovascular ailments. The most frequently diagnosed types of cancer are breast, colorectal, prostate, skin, and tracheal, accounting for 52.6% of all malignant tumors.

The mortality caused by malignant tumors is nearly 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Cancer patients will benefit from chemotherapy treatments closer to home. The Minister of Health announces that, in no more than two weeks, five hospitals from districts and the city of Balti will be prepared to take over some of the procedures. According to Ala Nemerenco, the aim is to reduce the enormous pressure currently exerted on the Oncology Institute in Chisinau, IPN notes.

The statements come in a context where, annually, thousands of oncology patients are forced to travel hundreds of kilometers for chemotherapy sessions, which worsens their health condition and implies additional expenses for families.

“It’s quite stressful in the summer, during the heatwave, to travel from Vulcanesti or Ocnita to Chisinau for a one-day treatment. Chemotherapy schemes are complex and do not apply the same as other treatments, when the patient is hospitalized for a week. Chemotherapy sometimes requires two days, other times – one day. Therefore, we must also consider the travel costs which are high, even if they are compensated. Some patients do not even know that these costs are compensated. Some are in an advanced stage of the disease and it is not advisable for them to make physical efforts,” said the Minister of Health, Ala Nemerenco, during the “In Context” show on the public television station.

Even though the lack of oncologists in every district represents a challenge, the authorities maintain that decentralization remains a priority, in order to facilitate patient access to treatment.

“We must acknowledge that there are districts where we do not have oncologists, but that does not mean we will give up. For those in Drochia, it is closer to go to Balti than to Chisinau. Our tendency is to bring treatments as close as possible to the patients,” stated Ala Nemerenco.

The Minister of Health explained that the Oncology Institute remains the main center for the treatment of severe oncological diseases. At the same time, hospitals in the districts and in the city of Bălți will only take on patients with milder forms, in the early stages of development.

“It’s about five hospitals, which are ready. In a week or two, they will take over chemotherapy treatments. The critical cases, the very serious ones, they will remain at the Oncology Institute. By transferring the simpler cases, in early stages, we will relieve the Oncology Institute and the pressure on human resources,” emphasized Minister Ala Nemerenco.
