“The conflict has been ongoing since 2018. Throughout this period, the situation has become more complicated each time politicians have intervened. And this time too, tensions have escalated following the involvement of some deputies. It is yet another proof that politics should not interfere in the activities of the Church,” Cristian Jardan wrote on Facebook.

The Minister specifies that the village church is a historical monument and is owned by the Ministry of Culture. At the request of the parishioners and the priest who has administered the place for 20 years, in 2019 the building was offered for use, for a period of 50 years, to the Orthodox Parish “Dormition of the Mother of God”, within the Metropolis of Bessarabia.

“Our interest is that this monument be as well preserved as possible and serve the real interests of the community,” emphasized Cristian Jardan.

The decision to offer the church to the parish affiliated with the Metropolis of Bessarabia is contested by the parishioners close to the Metropolis of Moldova, despite the existence of a definitive court ruling. Tensions periodically arise between the two communities, fueled by some politicians who take the side of one or the other of the factions.

“Moldova needs such people, it needs their wisdom, creativity, the strength of those who do not get discouraged even when the road is very difficult. “The award you receive today is also a call, a call to continue to inspire, to shape, to share your experience with those younger than you, because we need generations who believe in the power of well-done work”, the president further stated.

The Minister of Culture, Sergiu Prodan, mentioned that the process of selecting the laureates was a complex and rigorous one. “There were heated, lengthy debates, because the contenders were of high caliber. I am particularly moved and pleased that this year, on the list of laureates, we see a very good representation, in fact, of the potential of the Republic of Moldova. First and foremost, we have representatives of all generations”, the Minister declared.

This year’s laureates are the accordionist Radu Ratoi, the ethnographer Varvara Buzila, the poet Marcela Vieru (Benea), the visual artist Timofei Batranu, the founder of the Avdarma History Museum Ignat Cazmali, the researchers Dumitru Erhan and Stefan Rusu, the conductor Mihail Agafita, the judoka Denis Vieru, the coach Valeriu Duminica, and the writer Ion Anton.

The National Award is the highest distinction granted by the state of the Republic of Moldova for outstanding contributions in the fields of science, culture, arts, sports, and social activities. Each laureate receives a diploma, a medal, and a financial reward of 100 thousand lei.

Minister Prodan emphasized, at the same time, that the Republic of Moldova has not left the Creative Europe program, despite erroneous interpretations in the public space. This step is important for the native culture, as access to Creative Europe opens up funding and collaboration opportunities at the European level.

Another aspect mentioned by the minister is related to the financial contribution that the Republic of Moldova should make for participation in the program. Although the protocol provides for this contribution, “understanding both the situation in the Republic of Moldova, the importance of adhering to this protocol, the challenges we are going through, the desire of the European Union to support us, we actually have an understanding that this financial contribution for participation in the Creative Europe program, for these remaining two years of this program, the Republic of Moldova will not have to contribute financially”, says Minister Sergiu Prodan.
