Three participants in the “Transylvania 100” ultramarathon taking place in the Bucegi Mountains of Romania were rescued by mountain rescuers after falling into a ravine. The intervention teams requested a SMURD helicopter for evacuation, but it could not reach due to reduced visibility, reports IPN.

According to the Department for Emergency Situations within the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania, the incident occurred on Saturday, in the area of Malaiesti Cabin – Tiganesti refuge. One of the recovered individuals has multiple traumas, another suffers from hypothermia, and the third is conscious, with a pelvic fracture, cranio-cerebral trauma, and a fracture to the right hand. The IGSU announced that the runners slipped on an icy patch and fell into a ravine.

At the same time, rescuers have also recovered five people from the route, all conscious and cooperative, but with mild symptoms of hypothermia. They were transported to Malaiesti Cabin for evaluation and monitoring. The Mountain Rescue Service, the Gendarmerie, and mountain rescue teams remain on alert.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions and reduced visibility, of approximately 100-150 meters, the requested SMURD helicopter cannot intervene. The “Transylvania 100” competition began Saturday morning. Several hundred participants started on a route that departs from the Bran Castle area and returns to the same place. According to emergency services, some runners were not prepared for the difficult route, being equipped with city sports t-shirts and footwear. Meteorologists have warned that this weekend there may be storms, rain with electrical discharges, and sudden drops in temperature, especially in mountainous areas.

The number of anti-hail rockets used annually in Moldova has steadily decreased from over 10 thousand in 2021 to about 3 thousand in 2025. During the same period, the number of days with interventions from the anti-hail service has dropped from 42 days per year to 22.

In a response to IPN, the Hail Suppression Service stated that the system’s activity is coordinated based on daily weather forecasts and warnings, and the number of interventions varies from one season to another, depending on the intensity and frequency of atmospheric phenomena. The interventions aim to reduce the risks caused by hail falls on agricultural crops.

The institution specifies that the rockets are launched towards the active area of the cloud and disperse silver iodide particles, which favor the formation of small ice crystals, instead of large pieces. The aim is to reduce the process of forming large-sized hail.

During the period 2021-2025, the “Loza-2” and “Loza-7” type rockets, produced in the Republic of Bulgaria, were used, and the effectiveness of the interventions varied between 90% and 99%. The anti-hail system covers over 1.6 million hectares, of which approximately 1.3 million hectares are agricultural lands, out of a total of 2.5 million hectares of agricultural lands. The service has under its command 12 special units and 132 rocket points that cover 22 districts, the city of Balti, and UTA Gagauzia. Authorities anticipate expanding the protection zone by another 250 thousand hectares in the coming years.

At the same time, the State Hydrometeorological Service declared in a response to IPN that hail is a common phenomenon in the Republic of Moldova, during the period from April to October. On average, there are approximately 1-2 days of hail per year in the country, however, in some hilly and plateau regions, the frequency can reach up to 7-8 days annually.

SHS mentions that the most affected areas are the Central Moldavian Plateau, including the Codri region, and the Nistrean Plateau. Specialists explain that hail forms in cumulonimbus clouds, associated with strong storms, when masses of warm and humid air rise rapidly and meet cold air at altitude. The conditions for hail formation can be estimated 1-3 days in advance, but the exact area and intensity of the phenomenon can only be determined more precisely a few hours ahead.

The State Hydrometeorological Service specifies that the main difficulties in operating the system are the high costs for procuring rockets, maintaining infrastructure, the need for modernizing technical equipment and radar systems, as well as coordinating interventions in severe weather conditions.

Two girls, aged 11 and 12, fell through the ice of a lake in the “Valea Trandafirilor” park in Chisinau. The lifeguards intervened quickly and brought them to the surface in less than a minute, reports IPN.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations specifies that the incident took place on Sunday evening. The two teenagers, along with two other girls, decided to walk on the lake’s ice. Although the lifeguards from Water Rescue Station No. 5 warned them about the danger of thin ice, the girls ignored the warning.

In a short while, two of them plummeted into the water. The lifeguards intervened promptly and brought them to the surface. After the incident, the young women received care on the spot.

Rescuers are once again warning that venturing onto the ice of lakes is extremely dangerous, especially under fluctuating temperature conditions, when the ice layer becomes fragile and unstable. Parents are urged to supervise their children and forbid them from playing on the ice of rivers and lakes.

Road workers continue their work on several routes in the northern districts of the country, where ice and sleet persist. The interventions aim to clear the roadway and snow-covered sections, to ensure safe traffic conditions, reports IPN.

Interventions are underway on the R11 routes, in the area of the city of Briceni, G20, on the Drochia-Fantanita section, R14, in the Soroca district, G17, in the localities of Busila and Fagadau from the Falesti district, as well as on the M5 road, in the Rascani district, between the villages of Recea and Mihailenii Noi.

The National Road Administration informs that, throughout the entire network of roads in the country, traffic is taking place under winter conditions. All routes are passable, and the road surface is, for the most part, wet, as a result of interventions and the spreading of anti-skid material.

Drivers are urged to drive with caution, adjust their speed to the road conditions, and ensure that their vehicles are properly equipped for the cold season.

For some patients in the country’s districts, medical aid was provided with the help of rescuers, after ambulances encountered difficulties in moving due to the ice on the roads. In the last 24 hours, the intervention teams acted in 18 cases, to facilitate doctors’ access to the sick, reports IPN.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, most interventions were carried out in the Telenesti, Orhei, Causeni, Rezina, Anenii Noi, Criuleni and Nisporeni districts. All missions were successfully conducted, and people received the necessary medical care.

At the same time, the support of the firefighters was requested by several drivers, who, due to the ice, skidded off their routes. Most interventions for towing and unlocking vehicles took place in the city of Chisinau and in the districts of Causeni, Orhei, Criuleni, Hancesti, Ialoveni and Sangerei. In all cases, the drivers received help and were able to continue their journey.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, trees have fallen on several routes, and IGSU employees intervened in the Soldanesti and Soroca districts, to clear the roadway and secure the affected areas. No casualties have been reported.

In the last 24 hours, firefighters and rescuers have carried out over 90 prevention and intervention missions to mitigate the consequences of risk situations.

Moving forward, the IGSU teams are mobilized non-stop throughout the country, and citizens are urged to call the 112 Service in case of danger.

Traffic on national roads continues to take place under foggy conditions, locally dense, with sleet and slippery roadways. Representatives of the National Road Administration have specified for IPN that, currently, there are no impassable routes in the country and road workers are constantly intervening for the scattering of anti-skid material.

Authorities warn that black ice is repeatedly forming due to persistent precipitation. Drivers are urged to travel with caution, especially on sloping sections, curves, bridges and passages. If possible, avoid unnecessary travel.

According to AND, throughout the night, in the north, center and south of the country, 89 machines and 88 workers were mobilized, spreading approximately 835 tons of technical salt and 150 tons of anti-skid material. Interventions took place on routes from over 30 regions of the country.

In case of difficulties, traffic participants can request the support of emergency services or non-stop assistance at the following phone numbers: +373 78 337 744, +373 60 477 117.

IGSU warns that the ice on rivers and lakes is becoming dangerous with the warming weather in the coming days. People are alerted to the major risk of thin ice collapsing on rivers, lakes, and ponds. Rescuers warn that the ice layer is becoming unstable and can give way at any moment, reports IPN.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations advises citizens not to move, walk, or stand on the ice of rivers, lakes, and ponds, and not to allow children to play on the frozen surfaces of water bodies. Moreover, rescuers urge people to avoid ice fishing and using the ice to cross bodies of water, regardless of its apparent thickness.

In the event that a person is observed fallen into the water, IGSU recommends not to intervene directly, but to immediately call the 112 Service.

In the first two weeks of the year, the 112 Service received four requests for the rescue of swans trapped in ice on the lakes and rivers of Moldova. Specialists maintain that the birds are well adapted to winter and do not require human intervention, except in situations where they are injured.

The Vice President of the Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature, ornithologist Silvia Ursul, explained to IPN that the current winter is a typical one, with temperatures that have gradually dropped to the current values. The wildlife is adapted to these conditions.

Silvia Ursul stated that the presence of swans on the water bodies of Moldova during the winter is a natural phenomenon and she denied the rumors that their number is increasing annually. She pointed out that some species come to winter in the Republic of Moldova from the northern regions and areas with a cold climate.

The ornithologist mentioned that swan gatherings are found on rivers and lakes that do not freeze, such as the Dubasari reservoir or the segment of the Nistru river between Naslavcea and Soroca, where other aquatic birds also live. The Costesti-Stanca reservoir also shelters swans during the cold season of the year.

In Moldova, several species of swans live. The summer swan appears predominantly in the warm season, although some specimens remain even in winter. The winter swan comes from the northern part of the continent, from areas with a very cold climate, where survival during this period is impossible. Also, the small swan, native to the tundra region, winters in the country.
