According to police, thefts are most often committed by people who know the owners’ schedule or notice that they are absent from home for several days. Thieves take advantage of the owners’ inattention and lack of security measures to enter homes.

The IGP notes that the main targets of criminals are money, jewelry, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables that can be transported and turned into cash quickly. In some cases, the thefts are committed by organized groups, including repeat offenders.

Police warn that among the most common mistakes made before going on vacation are unsecured windows and doors, valuables left in plain sight and the lack of a person, relatives or neighbors, to periodically check the home. Also, full mailboxes and lack of lighting betray the fact that the owners are away.

Data from the General Inspectorate of Police shows a decrease in the number of thefts during the summer period of 2025 compared to 2024. If in June-August 2024 there were 323 thefts, in the same period last year, the number decreased to 208 cases, most of them being houses.
